De’VIA UAP Workshops

May 16, 17, and 18 was an amazing weekend for all involved in the De’VIA UAP workshops with Cynthia Weitzel!

Cynthia, a Deaf professional artist from Red Wing, Minnesota, inspired young and old alike as she taught and created in the future home of Conservatory ASL Northwest.

The event started with a school assembly on Thursday at MSDB.

About 25 students attended the daytime workshops, where they collaborated on a site specific art installation for the Urban Art Project in downtown Great Falls, at 315 1st Ave N. The art will be on display from June through August 2019.

On Friday evening Cynthia presented to a group of about 20 adults. She shared the history of De’VIA, her own art journey, and perspectives on Deaf art in the present. Many in attendance stayed after her inspiring lecture to create their own unique art.

This event was the first of many to be hosted by Conservatory ASL Northwest. A heartfelt THANK YOU!! to Cynthia for her generous gift of time, inspiration, and patient teaching. We feel like we spent a weekend with DaVinci or Michelangelo! What a privilege to have her here and work with us!

We would also like to express our gratitude to the MSDB Foundation for sponsoring the event! And thank you to all the MSDB staff that pitched in to make the event a success!
