CAN DEW

C.A.N. is excited to announce that this Saturday for MSDB’s “DEW” (Deaf Enrichment Weekend) we are hosting two wonderful De’VIA artists:

Cynthia Weitzel came to Montana in 2019 to lead a workshop with our ASL community and students from MSDB. Together with our community she created an inspiring installation for the Urban Art Project in downtown Great Falls, Montana. (See https://www.aslcan.com/devia-uap-workshops/ and https://www.aslcan.com/uap-reception-was-fantastic/ ) A year later, Cynthia again taught a workshop (this time on-line) to inspire or local artists with Deaf Motifs for the Summer 2020 Urban Art Project installation. (A post about that is coming soon…)
Cynthia is donating her time this weekend to share with MSDB’s outreach students and she is collaborating with…

Takiyah Harris!… This is what Takiyah says about herself on her website,

I was raised in Kankakee, Illinois and came from a hearing Black family. My family shared the narrative stories about the migration from South.  I am a fine art photographer that captures color and black & white photographs from the environment and events.  I focus on different perspectives and evaluate light or shadow and how they affect on objects and humans.  I am also an haptic artist using collage to explore Deaf culture – with a focus on Black Deaf people’s experiences.

You can read more about her and see her work on her FB page: https://www.facebook.com/BlackDeVIArt and on her websites: https://takihapticart.wixsite.com/mysite/about and https://takiphoto.fotomerchant.com

We are very excited to meet Takiyah and to see Cynthia again! Our heartfelt gratitude to these amazing deaf artists for giving their time and for sharing their inspiration with our community! And a big THANK YOU to Stacy Lawrence (the ASL CAN Film Camp co-founder and director) for connecting us with Takiyah!

See you at the DEW!
